Growing Up Online

The program "Growing Up Online" was really interesting to watch. They gave both sides screentime enough to explain their own views and implications for the future. The parents and teachers struggle to connect with students on the internet and it's just very difficult because there are basically no rules or regulations on what you can and cannot do. Most parents are even unaware of what their children do online. The parent may think, "Oh my son/daughter is at home and safe on the internet. Nothing can happen to them in the comfort of our own home." But through the program, it seems that socialization online can be harmful.

People's inhibitions are wiped away and will do/say things that they would normally think twice about in face-to-face situations. Teenagers have access to any type of information through the internet whether it be for good or bad, examples of bad research through Halligan (research on suicide) and the teen girl on eating disorders. As a parent, you don't want to seem as if you are intruding on and trying to control your child's private life but at the same time, you want to monitor and ensure their safety. It really requires parents to sit down and talk to their child about these situations. Come to an amicable agreement about things that they should reach out to their parents about.

  2. This is Sean Taggart. It does come down to how much freedom should be allowed by parents towards their children regarding the internet. If used for the right purposes the internet makes life much easier. As with anything you have to weigh the pros and cons and the internet has more pros.

  3. I completely agree with your statement: "However, social networking tools and applications cannot replace real life socialization. While these tools can bring people together, it can also bring them apart." This statement completely sums up the main ideas of all three pieces. Its really makes us question how helpful are these superfical relationships that many individuals have online and whether the reduction in real face to face social communication and transactions can be a good thing for society. Although it seems that the pros definitly outweigh the cons, it can be said that when this younger generations are faced with real life situations they may not know what to do or how to react fast enough because they dont have the comfort of delayed response that communicating online offers.
